![]() Time hasn’t cooled his anger, thanks to Dante’s influence, but it’s grown such that it’s basically consumed him. (Some parallel with the Elric brothers there as Ed also carries some resentment for his father for abandoning them.) Envy is full of hate for all humans as an extension of the hatred he feels for Hohenheim. “It’s unfair, isn’t it? Those boys getting everything back while you, who should be his dearest, are unable to obtain anything.Įnvy’s single other motivation is to destroy Hohenheim – the person who created and abandoned him. Dante is more than willing to use Envy for her schemes and knows how to take advantage of his emotions. His primary reason for his actions is sheer pleasure with his loyalty to Dante being a secondary reason. Envy, in contrast, is driven more by his emotions. She’s a relatively rational creature who is rarely cruel for the sake of it. Unlike Lust, who’s also an unrepentant killer, Envy realises that Dante is just manipulating them and so there’s no real point to their actions, whereas Lust at least believes in achieving her goal at the end – she has reasons for her deplorable acts. If he’s bored, maybe he’ll shapeshift into a loved one before killing someone to cause maximum devastation. This guy was bothering him so Envy casually killed him without so much as sparing him a glance. He regularly goes around causing discord and ruining people’s lives even though he’s one of the few characters who is aware of the futility of seeking out the philosopher’s stone because he is really 400 years old.Īnd he doesn’t care. He’s a hateful creature who enjoys tormenting humans and has absolutely no morals. Plus, seeing an apparition of him waving to Ed while he’s on the train made fans bawl even harder because Ed and the others didn’t know he was dead.Envy is actually a very straightforward character. ![]() The 2003 version just hits a little harder because fans got to see Hughes’ character develop. Sadly, Maes doesn’t get to enjoy fatherhood for too long and is killed by Envy, who took the form of his wife Gracia, in both versions. It was quite refreshing to see a character become a parent and have a relatively stable life to enjoy the perks. ![]() His role was expanded in the 2003 version and fans got to connect with him before he became a father and watched him become one. Despite working for the State, which is notorious for its secrets, Hughes was an honest and good man who truly wanted the best for his family and friends. Overall, most of the Homunculi had layers added onto their characters which made them all the more interesting to watch.Įvery Fullmetall Alchemist fan knows about Maes Hughes, the lovable State Military officer that was like an uncle-figure to the Elric brothers, loyal and supportive friend of Roy Mustang, proud husband to Gracia, and even prouder father to Elicia. Whereas with the 2003 group, they saw themselves as superior, but most of them wanted to be human again. When comparing the versions of both groups, the Brotherhood version of the Homunculi saw themselves as superior to humans and looked down on them. The 2003 version of Sloth was quiet and emotionless for the most part, she wanted to kill the Elric brothers to free herself of their connected pasts. Sloth in Brotherhood was more or less a mindless brute who followed orders no matter what. The 2003 version gave Lust a backstory and added a little more depth to her character than Brotherhood’s Lust. The only one who wanted to do their own thing and grew as a character was Greed, but the others seemed perfectly fine following orders and didn’t seem to want anything for themselves. ![]() In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the Homunculi were overall evil minions out to do Father’s bidding.
